What's better than the fact that City of Heavenly Fire is finally out in shops? The final instalment in the six book The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare is now in our grasps after an excruciating wait: so what could make this even better? How about attending the launch party on Tuesday 27th May with hundreds of fans and early copies of the books? By Gemma Williams At the beginning of May, myself and fellow IWG writer Jo Johnstone attended a launch event for the release of the paperback version of The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. The 22-year-old was in attendance, along with Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish, answering some questions about herself and her début novel. Set to be a series of seven and published by Bloomsbury, Shannon was deigned by many to become the next J. K. Rowling. Finally having finished the book, this is my verdict. By Agnieszka Ramian The 25th of May is best known as Towel Day, Douglas Adams’ and his unconventional novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979) appreciation day. Inspired by ordinarily titled Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe by Ken Welsh (1972), the concept first was presented to the public as a radio programme and then adapted into (originally) a five volume book. It sold a mind-blowing number of 250,000 copies within only three months and won top rank on the Sunday Times Best Seller list (1979) and was 24 on Waterstone's Books/Channel Four's list of the 'One Hundred Greatest Books of the Century' (1996). Its major success was also reflected in being ranked number four on BBC's "Big Read", which was an attempt to find the "Nation's Best-loved book". Millions of fans all over the world find their ways today to pay tribute to Adams’ life and work by doing things such as: carrying around a bath towel for a day, answering all questions: ‘42’, creating galleries of 42 must-see for hitchhikers photos/places and more! When it comes to us, IWG: Books team, we thought we would join the celebration by compiling a Book-et List made of 42 books one should read in their lifetime. Note, books will be presented in an ‘almost’ random order. By Agnieszka Ramian “Towel Day sees fans of the author and the book carrying towels with them to work, to school and as part of their daily activities. The most important thing that you need to remember in order to celebrate is DON’T PANIC; no matter what the day throws at you, draw comfort from the knowledge that you’re armed with your trusty towel. “– Days Of The Year. By Gemma Williams There are many different types of readers out there to those who live in the literary world. To many, there are two types of people, those who read and those who don't. But what about the subcategories within the readers category? By Gemma Williams Best seller Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson of Olympus series and the Heroes of Olympus Series has finally revealed the cover for the final book of Heroes of Olympus. This is a spin-off, or continuation, series of Percy Jackson with all new characters along with a few familiar faces. Riordan is a big fan of mythology as these two are based around Greek mythology and his other trilogy, The Kane Chronicles, focuses on the Egyptian Gods. By Gemma Williams Stephen King, known by all for the extensive horror collection under his belt as well fantasy, sci-fi and suspense, has been writing short stories since 1959 and novels since 1974. He has penned 56 novels up to date and has sold over 350 million copies of his books. Those who enjoy his work will be pleased to know that he is still working on his novels and has two being released later this year. Mr Mercedes is out 3rd June 2014 and Revival will be available to buy from 11th November 2014. His latest novel, Doctor Sleep which was released September 2013, is having an exclusive competition to celebrate its release in paperback form. By Gemma Williams To celebrate the release of the paperback copy of Internationally Best-Selling Dystopian debut novel The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, there is a special, one off event occurring in London Waterstone's on the evening of May 2nd 2014. The author herself will be there, as well as The Imaginarium Studios Directors, who are wanting to adapt the novel into a screenplay. These Directors are well known and loved by many. By Gemma Williams The time has almost arrived. Fans are counting down the days until The Mortal Instruments: City of Heavenly Fire is finally being released on May 28th 2014. This is the final instalment of The Mortal Instrument series, book six, after a long and agonising wait. By Gemma Williams It is common to hear many people, especially those of school age, question the relevance of Shakespeare and why we are made to study it in school. Sure, today is Shakespeare's 450th birthday, but does that mean that his work is irrelevant to contemporary society as we know it? Why is it important that his work is still taught today in school? |
